Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, or TENS, is a commonly used form of electroanalgesia, used to relieve pain for many conditions such as postsurgical pain, neurogenic pain, bladder incontinence, visceral pain, arthritic and myofascial pain, sympathetically mediated pain, and lower back pain. It is performed by using an electrical current produced by a medical device in order to stimulate the patient’s nerves for therapeutic reasons. The portable, battery-operated stimulator device is generally connected to the patient’s skin with several electrodes. The device can moderate the wide, intensity, and frequency of the electrical pulse.
