Patient and family education is the process of educating the patient and their family about the condition or injury they are facing. Patients and their families will learn the details of the injury or condition, how it applies to the patient’s daily life, what the patient will need to do or procedures that will need to be carried out, and what the family can do to help and support the patient, and why the family’s support is important. Another purpose of patient and family education is to reduce fear of the situation and of equipment needed in the procedures by explaining what the medical team is able to do to help the patient and how the equipment can safely help them reach their goals.
