Degenerative Disc Disease

The normal deterioration of spinal discs as people age is known as degenerative disc disease. This disease can occur in any part of the spine but is more commonly seen in the cervical spine region and lumbar spine region. It can be caused by several different medical conditions such as herniated disc, bulging disc, spinal stenosis and osteoarthritis. These conditions place pressure on the nerves and spinal cord causing pain and decreased nerve function. Symptoms can vary in severity from patient to patient. Symptoms may include back and/or neck pain, numbness and tingling. Some symptoms are so severe that patients are unable to continue with normal activities.

Treatment of degenerative disc disease depends on the cause. However, treatment of most spinal conditions is similar to each other. Anti-inflammatory medications and/or pain relievers are usually prescribed.Physicians will commonly recommend rest and lifting restrictions. They may also recommend a combination of heat and ice therapy along with physical therapy. The physicians and physical therapists at AOK Spine and Pain will conduct a thorough physical exam, may order x-rays or other standard diagnostic imaging tests and determine the best treatment plan for your condition in order to bring you pain relief and have you living a normal, active lifestyle again.
