Cervical Spine Disorders

The part of the spine that moves through the neck is called the cervical spine region. Common cervical spine disorders that cause neck pain are cervical stenosis, cervical disc herniation, and cervical spondylosis. As we age, the intervertebral discs wear out and begin to collapse or herniate and become less flexible. Common causes of disorders to this region include arthritis, injury and trauma. Chronic pain and/or decreased function of your brain, spinal cord, muscles or nerves may be an indication of other more serious conditions such as spinal infection, spinal cord compression, spinal tumor or fracture. However, neck pain is commonly nothing more than a stiff neck due to muscle strains.

Diagnosing disorders of the cervical spine begins with a thorough history and physical exam. It is important to differentiate neck pain related to cervical spine disorders from neck pain related to simple strains. The physicians at AOK Spine and Pain will determine if your neck pain is serious and will recommend the best treatment for your condition.
